Our Approach

Tony’s specialty areas are Sports and Manipulative Physiotherapy and Chronic Pain Syndromes. Tony has treated many long term ACC claimants over the past 28 years. Success defined as; returning to full time employment on full duties with minimal on-going interruption to daily activities.

All Physiotherapists at Southern Physiotherapy are expertly trained in managing and treating sports injuries. Such as muscle strains, sprained joints, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries, and tendinopathies.

A large part of our work at Southern Physiotherapy is assisting people to return to work or normal activity after surgery. Ideally we like to see patients prior to their elective surgeries in the gymnasium, teaching them strengthening exercises and building up surrounding muscles to the area of surgery so that post operative pain is decreased and normal function and mobility returns much quicker. Pre-Surgery Physiotherapy is proven to be extremely beneficial especially when people are anticipating long periods away from their usual work or activity.

Alternatively having Physiotherapy post surgery, in a timeframe which is at the discretion of your surgeon, depending on what has taken place, is highly advantageous. Teaching people how to move correctly, protect their injury from falls and position themselves to relieve postoperative pain is paramount.

Tony is trained in the BRADCLIFFE method to help correct breathing disorders as breathing incorrectly affects so many areas of a person’s overall general health and being taught breathing awareness in times of stress or high anxiety is life changing.

Our Physiotherapists take pride in correcting debilitating Joint and Nerve Pain. Manual mobilisation of joints and acupuncture where indicated is often used. We are a manual therapy clinic which means that we do not use ‘machines’ on our patients. We will only use ultrasound on areas of acute inflammation for example; haematomas.

Neck and Back pain are two of the more common conditions we see on a daily basis. Our aim is to treat the initial acute phase with manual therapy of the joint and gentle mobilisation; then teach our patient simple, yet effective exercises to then self manage their injury, should it recur in the future.

At Southern Physiotherapy we pride ourselves on our quality service; providing half hour appointments and we are experts at planning exercise programs, either through local gyms or pools to help people achieve their fitness or injury care goals. Papakura Gym and Recreation Centre is just across the road from our clinic. Our client car park has ample, flat car parking spaces with an easy walk across the road for gym based work. Alternatively, we use Massey Park Aquatic Centre in Papakura (opposite the train station) for pool based rehabilitation work.

Both Karen and Tony are long-distance runners themselves and particularly enjoy assisting people to plan training schedules to run their first half or full marathons. They are experts at teaching running technique, endurance education and prevention of running injuries.
